From First Referral to Future Boxing Coach: Harry’s Journey with Changing Lives

A case study celebrating six years of growth, leadership and achievement following a referral through the Active Essex Foundation.

Harry’s Story

Back in 2020, Harry Shaw became the first young person referred to Changing Lives Community Services through the Active Essex Foundation and the Youth Justice Team in Essex. At just 14 years old, Harry joined our sports and life skills programme, beginning a journey that would grow into something truly inspiring.

After completing his initial programme, Harry continued to attend our sessions and quickly became a positive role model for others. He supported new referrals, shared his experience, and developed into a youth leader and mentor within the programme.

Finding a Passion for Boxing

In 2024, Harry began attending our boxing sessions and started supporting the coaches at our gym. It soon became clear that he had found a real passion for the sport. His commitment, confidence and willingness to learn helped him progress, and he went on to represent Changing Lives at numerous boxing events.

Most recently, Harry successfully completed his first boxing leadership course and is now preparing to begin an employment pathway with Changing Lives Community Services, coaching boxing at our gym.

Recognition and Achievement

“Harry successfully completed the Boxing Leaders Course and demonstrated excellent engagement, enthusiasm and commitment throughout the day. He embraced the opportunity to develop his leadership skills, increase his confidence, and gain valuable knowledge that will support him in future education, employment, sporting and community-based opportunities.”

Harry’s journey shows the long-term impact that early support, positive opportunities and trusted relationships can have on a young person’s life. From our first ever referral through the Active Essex Foundation to becoming a mentor, leader and future boxing coach, Harry has shown outstanding resilience, dedication and growth.

Everyone at Changing Lives Community Services is incredibly proud of Harry and excited to support him as he takes this next step into boxing coaching. What an amazing achievement.
